The Thomas Jefferson Orchestra has developed a national reputation for excellence. In 1990 they received first place in the National Festival of Music held in Washington, DC, a competition in which they were invited to participate after their first place award at the Quebec International Festival. In 1992 they performed for the Music Educators National Conference held in New Orleans. They were invited to tour Russia in the summer of 1993 where they performed Mozart's Requiem with soloists from the Kirov Opera and the choir of the Smolney Cathedral in St. Petersburg. In April of 2002, the orchestra won First Place, the Adjudicator's Award, and the grand championship award for Most Outstanding Ensemble at the Heritage Music Festival Competition in Chicago.

The orchestra has toured in Florida, Mississippi, West Virginia, Chicago, and Virginia as well as England, Russia, Austria, and the Czech Republic. The members of the orchestra attend Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, a magnet school for students talented in math and the sciences. Notwithstanding their considerable talents in music, most of these students are bound for careers in math or science.
